Firecracker Cupcakes!

Yesterday we had the most fun playing all together as a family, eating, laughing, and watching fireworks.  I felt inspired to create cupcakes that fully embraced the spirit of the holiday. So why not combine 2 awesome things? Fireworks and Cupcakes?


Yes, I know it’s a great idea! 😉

And it was soooooo easy! Here’s what I did!

FireCracker Cupcakes

For this you simply make white and red cupcakes (I used the Duncan Hines Red Velvet, and White Cake mixes) according to their box directions.

You pipe cream cheese frosting on top and add patriotic sprinkles!


(My cream cheese frosting is like every other recipe out there, but in case you need one….

  • 8 oz. Softened Cream Cheese
  • 2-3 Tbsp Milk
  • 2-3 cups Powdered Sugar (Base the amount off of the texture you need from your frosting!) 
  • 4 Tbsp. Softened Butter
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla

Whip in a mixer and pipe onto cupcakes. Done. 

Now, these are pretty and delicious as is. But the firecracker is the fun part! You’ll need red, white, and blue candy melts. (You can also use white chocolate and food coloring.) You’ll also need red and blue sugar crystal sprinkles, and the special ingredient…. POP ROCKS!

All you need to do is melt some candy melts and place in a ziplock bag, snip off a small corner and make designs on wax paper. Zig Zags, swirls, or a crazy mess of criss-crosses will all work! As quickly as you can, sprinkle the pop rocks and red and blue sugar crystals on the chocolate. Once dry break up the pieces and place them as toppers on the cupcakes.


I made the fun mistake of making too many fireworks. You don’t need nearly this many!! So I put the leftovers in a bag and brought them to the celebration and the kids loved eating the firework candy as much as the cupcakes!
