We made these in the Assisted Living center that I work in. The residents LOVED it. And I did too. It is incredibly simple to do, but really looks great as a finished product.
You ready to do this?
- Metal Star (I bought these from Tai Pan Trading from $2.50 each, but here are similar ones here . I just wanted a star that was about 6-8 inches across, but you can go bigger or smaller if you like! Browse your local stores for Barn Tin Stars in the size you want and go from there!)
- Patriotic Craft Paper (I bought several sheets from a local craft store. You can buy a pack, but since I knew I didn’t need a lot I just picked out my patterns.)
- Modge Podge
- Sponge Brushes
- Work area
- Optional: Ribbon to hang the completed stars with.
You will need to trace and cut out diamond shapes from your patriotic paper. The easiest way to do this is to take a piece of computer paper and press it close to the surface of the star and trace the edges. Cut it out to become your pattern. Now trace this shape on the patriotic paper and cut out all of your diamond/kite shapes.
You are going to put modge podge on the metal, and fit the paper on in any arrangement and design you like. (You can rotate designs, choose one for the whole star, or have a variety like mine.) I like doing one point at a time so I can take my time in positioning the paper. Otherwise the modge podge might dry before I finish it.
Once all of your points are modge podged on, then you’ll go ahead and paint a thick layer over the whole thing. The great thing about this is it doesn’t have to be perfectly even! It will all dry clear. Just make sure there is a good amount on the edges and center to seal the paper down. Let dry completely.
You’re done! Hang and display however you like!
Let me know if you have questions about any of these steps, and if you make one I’d love to hear how it goes!
