What is Wellness?

So I graduated with a degree in Public Health and studied a great deal about what health and wellness means. Those terms are often used interchangeably, but they actually have distinct definitions!

Health: a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease.


Wellness: an overall component of health and well-being. Wellness is the positive component of health.

Let me explain a little more about what I mean…

There are 6 dimensions of wellness:







As individuals make personal choices that allow them to experience positive and balanced living in these areas they are working toward true wellness. That’s what wellness truly is. A life that is positive and balanced in these areas.

The reason I am so passionate about wellness is I’ve personally discovered how interconnected the aspects of our lives are. We cannot be truly happy without progressing toward wellness. When neglect one or more of these areas is often when we find ourselves spiraling into unhappiness. Wellness emphasizes individual responsibility for how a person manages their own good health. It’s all about choices! Now my spiritual or occupational well-being may look different from yours, and that’s ok! I hope to share tips and lesson about how to strive toward wellness that will help you on your individual path!
